Derek and Danika were amazing guides for our half day kayaking tour in the Knik river! Both kept our tour fun and informative, and provided all the little things we would need for the journey (snacks, waterproof phone sleeves, refreshments, gear, etc.) Easily the best kayaking experience I’ve ever had with amazing views and wildlife throughout, highly recommend!

Thank you so very much for your review of our kayaking tours. Derek and Danika are both amazing guides for our company; they both truly love what we do and share that passion with our guests. We hope to see you again in the future.
Three of my sisters and myself did the Jim Lake Kayak tour and it was SO MUCH FUN! Danika was an amazing guide, knowledgeable, totally chill, and it felt like another sister hanging out with us.
The inflatable kayaks we chose (they had paddle boards as well!) were so comfortable and easy to use and I’m obsessed with the life jackets they have.
The snacks and drinks they had offered were perfect for the time of day.
We didn’t have to load, pump up, or unload anything she took care of it all for us, we felt spoiled.
We picked the absolute best day, it was wonderfully sunny and a slight random breeze that felt so nice. Would highly recommend the Jim lake route as a starter for ANYONE, as it will for sure convince you to try other ones! 10/10 experience

We had a really great kayaking tour at Rabbit Slough with tour guides Ana and Josh! We saw so many eagles and other birds flying in the area. This would be a great tour to bring binoculars to. Our guides were awesome and we had a lot of fun.

First time doing kayaking. Had so much fun with our guide Danika! Wish we could've gone further but portions of the river are still iced up and a bit strong current. But overall, the view of the mountains will definitely show you how beautiful Alaska is!

Had a great experience ice fishing in late December! Our guide, Derek, was knowledgeable, patient, and kind. Don't let the cold temps keep you away. The tent was awesome and heated well. Highly recommend.

Both were great experiences and we would highly recommend Derek and using Adventures by True North AK to anyone who’s looking for a fun, hassle-free day of ice fishing 🙂

I rented snow shoes from True North for a last minute hike in early December. I was given this referral by our cabin owner, and I was blown away by the customer service. Not only did the owner deliver the snow shoes to my cabin, but he also threw in some complimentary bear spray because he could tell how nervous I was about encountering wildlife. When I wanted to add another pair of rentals for my husband the following day, he drove his van full of kids to meet me off the highway to deliver them with the threat of a big snow storm closing in fast. We were able to leave the rentals in our cabin upon checkout, and he picked them up for us. Incredible convenient. I can't recommend this company and the sweet owner enough!

Last minute booking for kayaking and this company was incredibly accommodating with fitting us in. Family owned business that did an amazing job with taking us on a relaxing trip down the river. The views are outstanding and the owner is very knowledgeable of the area. I would definitely recommend.

I got to go kayaking along the Knik River, having little previous experience with a kayak. I felt completely safe and comfortable riding with the group that was put together. Derek knew the equipment and area well.
Something to know about the trip is you will get wet. Which is great, but you will need the right gear depending on the season. We ran into strong winds and a rain jacket was great protection from the elements.
It was an incredible area and you get to see different sides of Alaska that you normally wouldn’t get a chance to see. It was an amazing adventure I would highly recommend!

I recently had the opportunity to join Heather and Derek on a kayaking tour in the beautiful Mat-Su Valley of Alaska, and it was an adventurous experience to say the least. They guided us through the "bayou of Alaska" and ended the tour on the Knik River.

We were fortunate to have sunny weather during the tour, allowing us to capture some cool photos of the scenic surroundings including Pioneer Peak and Knik Glacier. We also saw some loons, swans, a moose, and even another kayaker enjoying the same waters.

They provided a well-timed 20-minute stop for snacks and a restroom break. This break allowed us to refuel and recharge before continuing our kayaking journey.

This trip is definitely not for beginners. The strong headwind and choppy waters in a few places require a degree a comfort on the water. Although the end of the trip on the Knik River was glacially-fed, most of the trip had shallow waters.

One crucial aspect to consider when joining this tour is dressing appropriately for the weather. Alaska's climate can be unpredictable, so it's advisable to wear layers. I would recommend bringing a hoodie/fleece, a down jacket, and a raincoat to stay warm and dry throughout the excursion. A baseball cap and sunglasses were great to have. I should've worn leggings, but live and learn. And I'm happy I had my rain boots to avoid walking in the chilly waters when we had to walk for about 20 minutes around the windy, very shallow areas near the sand dunes.

You will get wet. Have spare clothes in the car. Bring a water bottle and snacks to recharge after the trip.

Overall, quite the Alaskan adventure for a sunny Saturday afternoon.

I participated in the Feb women's snowshoeing excursion and had such a great experience! It was so refreshing being in nature with women and extra nice that the trail was already mapped out with muffins and hot cocoa at the trail head. I didn't have to plan or think about anything with Heather guiding us and all the supplies provided. Highly recommend!
