Derek grew up in northern Utah, where his love for the outdoors started early. As a teenager, he spent his summers working on the waterfront at camp — and that’s where he discovered how much he enjoyed helping others get outside and have fun. He went on to earn a degree in Parks and Recreation with a focus on Recreation Resource Management from Utah State University.
When the snow flies, you’ll find Derek teaching swim lessons and training lifeguards at the local pool, keeping those safety skills sharp year-round. He’s also a proud dad of four energetic kids who love to tag along and help out whenever they can.

Wolfgang has lived, worked, and played in the Mat-Su Valley longer than anyone else on our team. Having spent most of his life here, he grew up exploring Alaska’s incredible natural landscapes—from running rivers and camping to discovering the best hole-in-the-wall restaurants around the Valley.

His deep roots and local knowledge give him a unique perspective on the place we love to share with our guests. Whether it’s finding the perfect river adventure, sharing a local favorite, or pointing you toward a hidden gem, Wolfgang is truly an amazing asset to our team.

Lifelong outdoor enthusiast and passionate athlete, I proudly retired after over 23 years of dedicated service in the military. Alongside my career, I have embraced my role as a high school soccer coach, inspiring young athletes to reach their potential. As a father of four young adults and a loving Poppa to two grandsons, I feel incredibly blessed to call the breathtaking state of Alaska my home, and I am excited to share the beauty and adventure this amazing place has to offer.
