Paddle Among Icebergs at Inner Lake George
Experience one of Alaska’s most spectacular hidden glacier destinations by air and water.
Leave the crowds behind and discover a remote wilderness landscape that few travelers ever have the opportunity to experience. The Colony Glacier Fly-Out Paddle Adventure combines a breathtaking Alaska floatplane flight, glacier exploration, and a guided kayak or stand-up paddleboard journey among floating icebergs at the base of the magnificent Colony Glacier.
Your adventure begins at Togo Aviation’s float dock located in Upper Wasilla Lake. While there, you’ll meet your guides, review the day’s itinerary, receive a safety briefing, and get outfitted with a specialized dry suit, personal flotation device (PFD), and paddling equipment.
From there, climb aboard a classic Alaska floatplane for a scenic flight deep into the Chugach Mountains. As you fly approximately 30 minutes each way, you’ll soar above braided glacial rivers, rugged mountain peaks, alpine valleys, and untouched wilderness. Along the way, your guides will share stories about Alaska’s geology, glacial history, wildlife, and the incredible landscape below.
Your destination is Inner Lake George, a remote glacial lake located at the terminus of Colony Glacier and accessible only by aircraft. After landing on the pristine waters of the lake, you’ll prepare your inflatable kayak or stand-up paddleboard and begin your guided exploration.
Once on the water, the pace slows down. Paddle quietly through crystal-clear glacial waters surrounded by towering mountains and brilliant blue icebergs created by the ever-changing glacier. Experience the immense scale of Colony Glacier from a perspective few visitors ever see.
Depending on conditions, you may witness the incredible sight and sound of glacier calving as massive pieces of ancient ice break away and enter the lake. While calving is a natural process that cannot be predicted or guaranteed, every visit offers a unique opportunity to experience Alaska’s constantly changing landscape.
After your paddle, enjoy a relaxing sack lunch and snacks while taking in the incredible scenery. You’ll also have the opportunity to stretch your legs on a short guided hike near the glacier terminus, learning more about the area’s geology, glacial history, and unique wilderness environment.
When your adventure comes to an end, board your floatplane for another scenic flight back to Wasilla, carrying with you memories of an Alaska experience few people will ever have.
